How to show French Bible verses on your church screen
For bilingual churches and francophone congregations: the verse in French, live, as it is quoted.
French and English, on one screen
Scrivent listens to the sermon, finds each Bible verse the preacher quotes, and puts it on the projector, the livestream and members’ phones. Choose French as the second language and the same verse appears in French directly under the English. It suits an English sermon with a French interpreter, or a French-speaking church that wants an English line for visitors.
What it looks like
John 3:16, as the screen shows it in French:
Car Dieu a tant aimé le monde, qu'il a donné son Fils unique, afin que quiconque croit en lui ne périsse point, mais qu'il ait la vie éternelle.
And Psalm 23:1: Psaume de David. L'Éternel est mon berger; je n'aurai point de disette.
Where French is read
French is read in churches across West and Central Africa (Côte d’Ivoire, Cameroon, DR Congo, Congo, Benin, Togo, Senegal, Burkina Faso), in France, Belgium, Switzerland, Québec and Haiti, and in the many bilingual English–French congregations in between.
Which French Bible this is
This is the Ostervald Bible, a classic Protestant French translation in the public domain. It is not the Louis Segond 1910 most francophone churches read: Segond numbers more than a hundred chapters differently from the English Bibles, which would put the wrong verse on screen, so it needs more work before it can be added. Ostervald’s wording is close to Segond’s in most places.
Seven chapters are left out, because Ostervald numbers their verses differently from the English Bibles and showing them would put the wrong verse on screen: Psalms 30, 51, 52, 54, 60 and 66, and 2 Corinthians 13. In those chapters the screen shows the English verse only.
How to switch it on
- Open the console. In the Bible list on the left, keep your English Bible (KJV, BSB, WEB and 15 more).
- Open + No second language above the screens and choose Français (OST).
- Push any verse and look at the projector: English on top, French underneath. Members following on their phones see both too.
Prefer French alone? Pick it in the Bible list as the main translation and leave the second language empty.
Can the pastor preach in French?
Being honest: automatic detection listens for English. A verse quoted in English, even in the middle of a sermon in French, is caught and shown in both languages. A verse spoken only in French is not detected yet, because live speech recognition is not reliable enough in it today. The operator can still find any verse in the Bible browser and push it by hand, in French and English together.
