How to show Kikuyu (Gĩkũyũ) Bible verses on your church screen

Gĩkũyũ under the English verse, with the letters right.

Kikuyu and English, on one screen

Scrivent listens to the sermon, finds each Bible verse the preacher quotes, and puts it on the projector, the livestream and members’ phones. Choose Kikuyu as the second language and the same verse appears in Kikuyu directly under the English. It suits a service in English and Gĩkũyũ, or a vernacular service that still wants the English line for visitors.

What it looks like

John 3:16, as the screen shows it in Kikuyu:

Nĩgũkorwo Ngai nĩendire kĩrĩndĩ, akĩruta Mũrũ wake wa mũmwe, nĩgeetha mũndũ o wothe ũmwĩtĩkĩtie ndakoore, no agĩe na muoyo wa tene na tene.

And Psalm 23:1: Jehova nĩwe mũrĩithi wakwa, ndirĩ kĩndũ ingĩaga.

Where Kikuyu is read

Gĩkũyũ is read in central Kenya, around Nairobi, Nyeri, Murang’a and Kiambu, and in Kenyan churches abroad.

Which Kikuyu Bible this is

This is Biblica’s Kiugo Gĩtheru Kĩa Ngai Kĩhingũre, a modern translation published under an open licence (CC BY-SA 4.0), and the screen credits it “© Biblica” as that licence asks. It is a modern translation, so the wording may differ from the older Kikuyu Bible many members read.

ĩ and ũ are in every display font Scrivent uses, so they never fall back to a different typeface.

How to switch it on

  1. Open the console. In the Bible list on the left, keep your English Bible (KJV, BSB, WEB and 15 more).
  2. Open + No second language above the screens and choose Gĩkũyũ (KIK).
  3. Push any verse and look at the projector: English on top, Kikuyu underneath. Members following on their phones see both too.

Prefer Kikuyu alone? Pick it in the Bible list as the main translation and leave the second language empty.

Can the pastor preach in Kikuyu?

Being honest: automatic detection listens for English. A verse quoted in English, even in the middle of a sermon in Kikuyu, is caught and shown in both languages. A verse spoken only in Kikuyu is not detected yet, because live speech recognition is not reliable enough in it today. The operator can still find any verse in the Bible browser and push it by hand, in Kikuyu and English together.
